BIOS

Chief Justice Steve McKeithen

Place 1

Steve McKeithen was born on March 17, 1952, in Harris County, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree
in Political Science in 1976 from the University of Houston. In 1984, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence
Degree from South Texas College of Law. In 1989, he left private practice and joined the Montgomery County
Attorney's Office as a prosecutor. In 1992, he was appointed the Civil Division Chief of that office. He was
elected to the position of Chief Justice in 2002.

Judge McKeithen married the former Sherry Holland in August 1970, and they have two children, Sarah and
Seth. Sherry is an eighth-grade math teacher at Montgomery Junior High.


Justice David Gaultney

David Gaultney was born October 20, 1954, in Eku, Nigeria. In 1972 he graduated from Hillcrest High School in
Jos, Nigeria. He received a Bachelor of Arts Decree with highest honors from Southwest Texas State University
in 1976, a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree with honors from The University of Texas in 1979, and a Master of
Laws Degree from The University of Houston in 1993.

He practiced law with the law firm of Mehaffy & Weber for 21 years, and obtained certifications in Civil Appellate
Law, Civil Trial Law, and Personal Injury Trial Law from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He is a life
fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.

David Gaultney was elected as Justice of the Ninth Court of Appeals in 2000 and re-elected in 2006. He was
appointed to a three-year term on the Texas Supreme Court Advisory Committee in 2003, and to a second
term on the Committee in 2006.

Justice Gaultney has two sons, Brad and Michael, and is married to Carol Chedsey Gaultney.


Justice Charles Kreger

Charles Kreger was born on June 27, 1959, in Klein, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1982
from the University of Houston. In 1985, he received a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from South Texas
College of Law. His legal experience emphasized general civil litigation, from both prosecution and defense, as
well as family law, as a member of a small law firm and solo practitioner, in courts all across the State of Texas.
He was elected to the position of Justice of the Ninth Court of Appeals, Place 2, in 2004.

Justice Kreger has been married to his wife, Edith Kreger, since 1977. They have two children, Joshua and
Jessica.

Justice Kreger is a past director of the Montgomery County Bar Association and has served on the boards of
various civic organizations. He continues to serve as a Deacon at the First Baptist Church of Conroe, where he
and his family are active members.


Justice Hollis Horton

Hollis Horton was born October 19, 1955, in Friona, Texas. In 1978 he graduated from Duke University and
received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with honors. He attended law school at the University of Texas and
received a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree in 1980.

Horton practiced law with Orgain, Bell & Tucker for 23 years, and obtained certifications in Civil Trial Law, and
Personal Injury Trial Law from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in 1986, and was re-certified in those
specialties in 1991, 1996, 2001, and 2006. He is a fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.

Horton was appointed to his current position as Justice of the Ninth Court of Appeals in 2004 by Governor Rick
Perry.

Justice Horton and his wife of 27 years, Courtney, have a daughter, Marriott, (23) and a son, Rob, (18).
Courtney works in development for the Julie Rogers "Gift of Life" program which promotes cancer awareness
and provides screening tests for the medically underserved in Southeast Texas. Marriott is a graduate of
Washington & Lee University, and Rob is a senior at Westbrook High School.
